Open Source Under Siege: Can Volunteer Projects Survive Modern Security Threats?

Details
Category: FOSS Software
20.Aug
Recent months have exposed critical vulnerabilities in open source software infrastructure, challenging fundamental assumptions about volunteer-driven development. From targeted attacks on the Arch User Repository to sophisticated supply chain compromises, these incidents highlight urgent questions about sustainability and security in community-maintained software. As both nation-state actors and criminal hackers increasingly target open source projects, the community faces a watershed moment in adapting traditional trust models to modern threats.

The Arch User Repository (AUR), Linux's largest community-maintained software repository, recently weathered an unprecedented series of security challenges. Over a three-month period, this vital open-source resource faced coordinated DDoS attacks, sophisticated malware campaigns, and targeted social engineering attempts. The incidents not only tested AUR's technical infrastructure but also highlighted crucial questions about sustainable security in community-driven software distribution. The response from Arch Linux's security team and broader community offers valuable lessons for open-source projects worldwide, demonstrating how collaborative defense strategies and modernized security practices can protect decentralized software ecosystems.

Debian GNU/Hurd 2025: A Microkernel Milestone for Free Software

Details

The Debian Project's 2025 GNU/Hurd release marks a significant leap forward for alternative kernel architectures in free software. While Linux dominates modern computing, this updated Hurd port demonstrates the viability of microkernel designs for specialized use cases. With improved hardware support, new filesystem capabilities, and growing community documentation efforts, Debian's "other architecture" offers researchers and FOSS enthusiasts a production-ready platform to explore decentralized service architectures and security-through-isolation approaches. This release challenges the assumption that monolithic kernels are always the right tool for the job.

Here's a short screencast showing how to create a cylinder with a grid of holes in it.

I'm using the following features in FreeCAD:

  • Part View
    • Create and place cylinders
    • Shape actions on shapes (difference in this case)
    • Fillet (you also have chamfer)
  • Draft View
    • Array toolArray tool
      • Polar array (circular)
      • Orthogonal array (linear)

FreeCAD

freeCAD logoWith the rise of 3D printing, there has been a great increase of software that will gladly help you out to create your own designs. Google created Sketchup, Autodesk even has its own toolchain that will allow you to design and print objects. Often, these applications have a set of limitations - be it legal (not for commercial use) or functional (some features are not available, e.g. limited export functionality).

Are you looking for software that is free to use, without restrictions... then you're bound to end up finding FreeCAD. This great application is free and open source, yet currently very actively developed and user friendly. Furthermore, next from running it on Windows or Mac OS, the software unleashes it full potential when running under Linux.

Looking for help? Maybe in your design process, or maybe you're looking for a new feature? The forum has a vibrant community and the development environment is tailored to do magic if you know some basic Python programming... you can easily create your custom extensions...

I'm not an engineer or hardware developer myself, but can really enjoy the strenghts of this great application.

Inkscape

inkscape logoWith displays increasingly getting higher and higher in resolution, having rasor sharp images is a must. While photos have to participate in the megapixel race, there's a lot of artwork out there that gets a much better effect if it gets stored vectorially.

I love Inkscape because it allows me to use multiple layers and easily create and place objects together. Fairly simple objects (like f.e. safety icons) are small in size, no matter what the dimensions of an image are.

A nice feature I love to use, is the option to import from PDF and then extract certain details.
